Govt. School Support Program

Govt. School Support Program

For the academic year 2012-13, the Isha Vidhya schools are leveraging their experience, the tools developed and facilities created to intervene in Government Schools. These interventions will aim to enhance the quality of education in Govt. schools and result in several thousands of children benefiting from a meaningful education. Thirty one Govt. schools in Coimbatore, Dharmapuri and Salem Districts have been adopted to take up various initiatives aimed at improving quality in these schools.

With experience in setting up and running schools in rural districts of Tamil Nadu, Isha Vidhya is only too aware of the challenges faced by government schools. These include:

  •  Very high student-teacher ratio
  • Lack of basic facilities such as toilets, benches, library books, etc.
  • Lack of inspired teachers and a high absentee rate
  • High drop-out rate among students

The interventions envisaged, in stages, include the following, which are likely to create the maximum impact on the efficacy of the Govt. school education:

  • Appointing teachers to fill critical gaps and reduce the student-teacher ratio
  • Inducting teachers to teach remedial classes to mainstream the slow learners
  • Improving English language capabilities of students through other methodologies.
  • Infusing hitherto neglected aspects like Sports, Yoga, Arts & Crafts, Health, Hygiene & Environmental awareness, to bring all round development and sustain students’ interest in coming to school.
  • Adding some badly needed infrastructure like toilets, computers, library books, etc.
  • Training Govt. school teachers to access and use classroom educational aids and digital content.

The above are likely to enhance motivation of the Govt. school teachers and students to be regular to school by making learning and teaching far more interesting and effective. This will result in several thousands of children benefitting from a meaningful education, transforming their lives.
